Birthing Kits Assembly Day events

Every 90 seconds a women dies of complications related to pregnancy and childbirth, and 99% of these occur in developing countries where the lack of access to sterile conditions leads to high rates of infection.

Our club organises an assembly of sterile birthing kits, through Birthing Kit Foundation Australia. The kits will contain items needed for a clean and safe delivery, and they will be sent out to remote destinations in developing countries in Africa, Asia or the Pacific with the goal of enabling women in these regions access to a sterile birthing environment.

Our previous Assembly Days:
  1. April 2015 - 200 kits
  2. November 2015 - 1,000 kits
  3. April 2017 - 3,400 kits

Kiva Micro-financing

Kiva is a non-for-profit organisation that facilitates micro-financing of small businesses in developing countries to leverage them out of the poverty cycle.  The Kiva website presents the stories of people and projects requiring loans to get set up.  Members of our club are enthusiastic about donating a sum of money to be utilised as loans, which once repaid can be re-loaned to other people in need.  .

We are currently lending through both Kiva and Kiva Zip (a new initiative that utilises peer to peer lending as opposed to institutional lending).

Here is a description of one of the projects we are proud to help fund via Kiva.

Nenita, 49, is a married woman and a mother of four children.  She resides with her family in the province of Iloilo, in the Philippines.  Nenita is a very hardworking woman.  In order to support the needs of their family, especially for their children's schooling, Nenita and her husband decided to earn a living through fishing.  For almost 18 years now, fishing has provided them the income that they need for their sustenance.

Now, Nenita wants to borrow a loan from CEVI to buy a new fishing boat.  With a new boat, Nenita is confident that they will be able to improve their income from their fishing business.

'World of Difference' humanitarian travel
2015

“World Of Difference” is a District 9800 endorsed project that powerfully portrays the work of Rotary in developing countries.  Organised by the Rotary Club of Melbourne South, participants are invited to join the group on an tour of regions within developing countries such as Cambodia that require support from Rotary and other volunteers that would like to join the program.

The tour visits well resourced and well run Rotary-supported projects.  During visits we provide donations and volunteering.  Each tour builds on the last to provide on going dental hygiene checks, English, knitting and craft classes, depending on the volunteers skills/talents.  In January 2015, RCMP club member Roy Zhang joined the trip and volunteered with various tasks in Cambodia.

Book drive for Ghana Library project
2013

Adesua is a project run by Projects@UB, an Enactus program at the University of Ballarat and aims to improve the standard of living for the community of Frankadua, Ghana. This program facilitated the development and construction of a library in Frankadua during December 2013 in The Lords Doing International School, as well as providing assistance and support for the people of the community.

Our club collected goods for the Adesua Project such as books, stationary, old school bags, and school supplies to fill the library, and donated a financial contribution to the construction of the library.

Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) Patient Visit
2011

ROMAC is a Rotary program assisted by many eminent Australian and New Zealand surgeons who generously donate their time free for the treatment of children from more than 20 developing countries with urgent medical treatment that has given them new hope.

Via Marie was part of the 2011 ROMAC program. Members of RCMP were involved in helping Via adjust to his stay in Melbourne by picking him up from the airport, taking him out for a day and supplying him with creature comforts at his hotel.
