COMMUNITY PROJECTS
These projects focus on creating positive change in our local community.

SecondBite volunteering

SecondBite exists to provide access to fresh, nutritious food for people in need across Australia. They do this by rescuing and redistributing surplus fresh food, building community capacity in food skills and nutrition and advocating for an end to food insecurity.  Over the last few years our club has been rostered for a dedicated shift every 6 months. The food collection takes 1-2 hours and has proved very popular with club members and friends.

Clean Up Australia Day in Prahran

Clean Up Australia Day inspires thousands of Australians to take to their local park, beach, bushland and streets to clean up their local environment.  Since the national event started in 1990, Australian have donated more than 28.2 million hours taking to their streets, bushland, parks and waterways on Clean Up Australia Day, removing an estimated 302,213 tonnes of rubbish from 151,909 sites across the country.  In 2016, our club ran a site in the area around Prahran train station and the Grattan Street Park (next to Coles supermarket carpark).

Bentleigh Sunday Market volunteering

The Bentleigh Sunday Market is a trash and treasure market run by volunteers from the Rotary Club of Bentleigh Moorabbin Central, with assistance from the Rotary Club of Moorleigh Moorabbin.  It is one of the oldest Sunday markets in Melbourne and since 1977, all proceeds raised have supported local charities and Rotary projects such as Bushfire & Flood Relief.

Our members helped to raise funds for our club projects by volunteering at the Bentleigh Sunday Market.

2015

Our club has volunteered for a tree-planting event called "40,000 Trees", which aimed to plant 40,000 trees and shrubs to help create and connect wildlife corridors, repair landscapes and offset your carbon footprint.  Due to weather conditions, the volunteers planted just over 30,000 trees.

Our club has been involved with the Melbourne Park Football Club for several years.  Our volunteers cover many roles, from umpiring the game to water runners, and of course no game is complete without a classic sausage sizzle.

Working bee at McAuley House
March & October 2014

McAuley House is a home for women in Melbourne who would otherwise be homeless or subject to violence.  For some years the Rotary Club of Central Melbourne Sunrise have been helping to improve their gardens. Several members of our club gave up a Saturday morning where morning tea and lunch, some fun and a sense of achievement were all involved, as well as a little perspiration!!

Community Village Project
November, December 2013, February, November, December 2014

Victoria Police along with Rotary and City Of Melbourne developed the Community Village which operates on select Friday and Saturday nights from 11pm until 4am to provide a safe, well-lit and friendly place to wait in Melbourne CBD for the Night bus, or to grab some free refreshments. Members of our club volunteered their time on several occasions in 2013 and 2014 to help run the Community Village during weekends where a lot of night goers where expected, including White Night 2014.

Fitzroy Primary School Working Bees
April, August, December 2013 & October 2014

The club teamed up with the Rotary Club of Fitzroy for a very successful Working Bee at Fitzroy PS.  Fitzroy Primary School (PS), like many other public schools, do not receive money to maintain the outdoor school yards and as a result they are currently in poor condition.  The Working Bee was arranged to inject some TLC into the schoolyards- the main tasks included repainting structures in the school colour, and painting over graffiti, planting new shrubbery and repairing outdoor benches.  Followed by drinks & BBQ, the working bees were a rewarding way to spend a Sunday morning where the results of hard work are immediate.

Camp Getaway
February 2012, August 2013

Camp Getaway located in Axedale is a Rotary owned and run camp site that provides a meeting place for community and support groups. RCMP has an annual weekend at Camp Getaway that involves strategic planning and volunteering on site to help with the maintenance and development of the site. It is also a good chance to enjoy some social time outside of our busy Melbourne lives!

Birthing Kit Assembly
April 2013

Every 90 seconds a women dies of complications related to pregnancy and childbirth, and 99% of these occur in developing countries where the lack of access to sterile conditions leads to high rates of infection. Members assisted with the assembly of sterile birthing kits at an event organised by the Birthing Kit Foundation. The kits contained items needed for a clean and safe delivery, and they were sent out to remote destinations in developing countries in Africa, Asia or the Pacific with the goal of enabling women in these regions access to a sterile birthing environment.

Richmond Toy Library
2010

Richmond Toy Library is a non-for-profit organisation that aims to assist families with providing their children with a changing selection of toys for a minimum financial outlay. Each week RCMP members volunteered their time to assist the Toy Library and help them progress outstanding tasks that they did not have the resources to complete.
